Surprising doesn't begin to describe this book. It's very well done sprawling sci-fi with action, romance, political games and excellent world building. Not to mention it's long enough to tell a quite complicated story without just burping up the ending or rushing through. I would say that the first couple of chapters don't even begin to hint at the scope of the plot. I thought the story was going to be much narrower and then was very pleased to discover the well drawn threads that kept interconnecting to create something much bigger and important than one person's journey. It didn't lose itself in the large plot either. The focus stays firmly on the main characters as they go through major changes which keeps it interesting and engaging. Highly recommend.Edit**Kyra got rid of the horrendous cover art and replaced it with something boring but at least professional looking. It's a much better fit now.

The Significant – Good vs Evil and Forbidden Love
I became hooked on The Significant after several chapters. My favorite sci-fi books are the ones that evoke emotion. The novel has two central themes, good overcomes evil and forbidden love between a rich and powerful leader and a poor and desperate girl. Both themes are centered on a futuristic world controlled by a complex artificial intelligence called Venus.
The Elites are genetically engineered. The Syndicate is the group of Elite leaders who rule the planet under the direction of Venus. They are not considered human and are supposed to be devoid of emotion. Venus forbids the Elites to be in any intimate relationship. The planet human inhabitants are two separate classes– those with citizenship and rights and those without. Throw in a little bit of galactic war and the desire to change lives for the better and we’ve got some nice conflict.
One of the jobs that a human citizen can have is to be a Significant which is a paid companion to wealthy citizens. The Elites are not supposed to have contact with a Significant. Kailynn, a non-citizen from Trid, fakes papers to work as a Significant, to save her brother from jail. She eventually gets a high paid job to be the secret Significant to one of the Elites. It turns out to be the planet’s most powerful, the Golden Elite Isa.
While I enjoyed and was hooked into the story and the development of emotions between Kailynn and Isa, the book did have some flaws. The biggest was Kailynn’s brother and her ties to Trid just fading away. As one negative review said, it was like the character became someone else. Another was the lack of security around the Golden Elite which not only let Kailynn get close to her but the Colonel (no spoiler and so I’ll leave it at that.) The security forces (the human Officials and Robots) were in areas of the planet but not in others. It made no sense to me why security was at the Syndicate Building, offices of the Elites, but not within the homes of an Elite. And, there was some head-hopping and a few typos (minor nitnoid). It is difficult to edit a book and it looks like Kyra Anderson (aka K.J. Amidon) wrote and self-published; inevitably some typos will slip through under such a broad responsibility.
Overall, the plot, the themes, and the emotions of The Significant overcame what flaws I saw and were enough for me to give this novel a four out of a five star.
The “Significant” surprised me at just how good and well written the story is and how captivating the characters are. I love a good fantasy/syfy, with strong lead women who also become lovers. One of my favorites is by Melissa Good (Merwolf) “A Story of Humanity The Jess and Dev Tales”, “Partners & Of Sea and Stars”.
When I first started reading the first few chapters, I had to go back and double check the description to ensure that I was actually reading a “Lesbian Romance”, but once I reached the part where Kailynn was given her special assignment with the Golden Elite Isa, I realized where the story was heading.
The book was awesome, a must read if you like science fiction & fantasy and I appreciate that it was nearly 600 pages that kept my attention until the end.
This is one of the best sci-fi book I ever read. The story was immediately engrossing with assassination attempts, political mindgames, war, intrigue, powerful technology, and a superb romance. It's mind blowing and will keep you hooked till the very last page. The author created an amazing story with a strong plot line. A plot line I cannot describe because of the complexity. Happens so much that this is impossible. It's worth all your time and money. No need to say that I enjoyed it immensely. Wow, what a story!
I received this book discounted from BookBub and it is definitely worth the read! The description does not do it justice! The characters are believable and real and so is the fictional planet of Taio! One thing I love about the book is that they don't make every male in the story shallow stick figures, just because they are male. I detest the "All men are pigs, men are bad bad bad lesbian books. It also doesn't emphasize the fact that it's LGTB. The two main characters just happen to be women in love. I also love that they combined my two favorite genres, LGTB and scyfi and did it very well! The author was not overly descriptive on the buildings and the way of life for her characters. It was easy to read and easy to wrap your mind around and I could picture myself in their society. I would like to give the author a little advice though. Proof reading is important! (I would never take away a star for that, because I am sure you could point out fifty mistakes in my review itself!) I hope she continues with this story. I am anxious now to read all of her work!
